1. Identify the Problem (to determine if a call to 911 is needed)
When a Person:
- Is or becomes unconscious
- Has chest pain or pressure
- Is bleeding severely
- Has injuries to the head, neck, or back
- Is having difficulty breathing or is breathing in a strange way
- Has pressure pain in the abdomen that does not go away
- Is vomiting or passing blood
- Is having a seizure, has a severe headache, or has slurred speech
- Appears to have been poisoned
- Has possible broken bones
- Has what you think could be a medical emergency
DO NOT MOVE THE VICTIM UNLESS THE SCENE IS UNSAFE OR BECOMES UNSAFE.
2. Make the Emergency Call: CALL 911
STATE:
- WHERE: Calmly give the location of the injured or ill person.
- WHAT: Give a clear description of what happened, if known, and how many involved.
- WHO: Report who the injured or ill persons are, if known.
- WHEN: Report when the injury happened or illness began.
- WITH: Stay with the injured or ill person until help arrives.
DO NOT HANG UP THE PHONE UNTIL THE RESPONDER TELLS YOU TO DO SO!
3. Call Security or Other College Personnel
Call Security at 417.626.1200 to inform that a call is out to 911. Give them the same information that you gave to the 911 operator. Security or the Physical Plant Director will locate the campus nurse and both will respond to the emergency if available.
ALSO CALL 911 IN CASE OF:
- Fire or explosion
- Presence of noxious gas
- Swiftly moving or rapidly rising waters
- Downed electrical wire
- Vehicle collisions with injuries
- Victims who cannot be moved easily
